Mirrors
Mirrors are so much more than just a way to check your makeup. As true works of art, mirrors can add dimension and depth to any space. They come in styles that fit any decor, size, shape, and finish.
Accenting a Space
Decorators create inviting spaces within a home or office. Choosing a mirror
as an accent piece will bring vitality to a room,
especially if the room consists of mostly neutrally combined backdrops. Mirrors
are an easily added solution to give your room a new, lively look. For example,
if you want a room to reflect natural themes, you could add a rustic or country-styled
mirror to an arrangement. Rustic mirrors have
frames with carved images from nature, or distressed finishes, or even winding
vines or greenery to convey simplicity with elegance.
Creating Space
Mirrors have the magical ability to make a room look larger. By reflecting what’s before them, mirrors make the room appear to continue on through the solid wall behind them. It’s a good idea to provide pleasant arrangements of artwork or accessories for the mirror to reflect. This way, your “added space” will be a friendly, complementary addition to the room. Using a mirror to create the illusion of added space is particularly effective with traditional mirrors. With elegant lines and styling, traditional mirrors make a statement that isn’t trendy, but timeless.
Balance
A good rule to follow is accenting large walls with larger mirrors, and smaller
walls with small mirrors. Of course, there are some variations to this rule,
but staying true to this idea will help you avoid making a large wall look overpowered
against one small mirror, or too cluttered with many small pieces. Balance the
design by using a few favorite pieces that are in proportion to the wall or
the space they are meant to enhance. You should be especially aware of creating
balance if you are considering an ornately framed mirror for a small wall. Unless
the mirror is small, ornate and heavily gilded
mirrors are grand by design and generally more suited to larger spaces.
A Fresh Look
Contemporary mirrors immediately bring
a modern flair to a room. Many contemporary mirrors have one aspect that is
bold and unexpected, such as untraditional finishes, beveled mirror surfaces,
and added twists and turns in traditional shapes. Another variation on a modern
style is the frameless mirror, which makes
a statement using beveled or etched edging on the mirror itself. The effect
is uncluttered and eye-catching. With a frameless mirror, you don’t have
to worry about matching a frame with other accents in the room.
Beauty and Function
Vanity mirrors are important accessories. Varieties
include free standing or wall-mounted styles, some styles are self lighting
or magnified. Cheval mirrors are lovely full-length
mirrors supported on floor-standing frames, many with a revolving feature.
Mirrors for Children
Kids' mirrors are often whimsically patterned
and bold in color, making them easily compatible with an existing theme. Favorites
styles include flower patterns and nautical themes.
Whether you choose a mirror for a simple accent or the focal point of a room, you may find a mirror to be a favorite piece, and the most versatile decor in your home.
